“I have had Trichotillomania, an OCD like/Impulse control behavior that has made me continuously pull my hair out for the last thirty years. I have tried lots of modalities and nothing worked but In just one hypnotherapy session with Mia, that all changed. Thanks to Mia’s skill, experience, and support I have been pull free with NO desire to pull.   As a Yoga practitioner/teacher, and a purveyor of healing from emotional and physical pain, Mia strengthened my attention to all that I want to bring into this world by allowing me a greater peace, focus, and freedom.

I highly recommend Mia for whatever healing you need,  she is the absolute ally to have.”

I’ve been seeing Mia for 3 months for therapy and hypnosis sessions to cope with anxiety and stress and I am beyond appreciative and impressed with  the tools she has given me in such a short amount of time. My first time trying hypnosis was with Mia. I was a both fascinated and skeptical with hypnosis previous to trying it because all I knew about it was what I saw in the movies. It isn’t what one would expect at all. Mia has a way of putting you in a deep state of relaxation– you are conscious, but it also evokes a lot from your subconscious. Feeling that extreme state of relaxation has been a sanctuary to come back to in moments of high-stress and I have noticed an immense difference in how I’ve been dealing with stress. I look forward to exploring it further with Mia and highly recommend that others have an open mind and heart to explore this technique.

Hypnotherapy

What is Hypnosis?

The American Institute of Hypnosis describes hypnosis as a normal, physiological, altered state of consciousness where you are tuned out to most of the stimuli around you creating an increased concentration of the mind, an increased relaxation of the body, and an increased susceptibility to suggestion. Most of us enter a hypnotic state every day – when we are absorbed in a good book or movie or when we have driven our car the last few blocks home without realizing how we got there.

What Hypnotherapy can help?

  • Anxiety
  • Emotional Pain
  • Smoking Cessation
  • Weight Control
  • Habit Elimination
  • Pain Control
  • Time Management
  • Motivation
  • Negative Self Talk
  • Self Sabotage

What results can you expect from your session?

Many people want hypnotherapy to be a magic pill that will snap you out of your problem or put you in an ideal state. Hypnotherapy is not magic, just an amazingly effective way to facilitate healing and wholeness, cultivating a deep connection with your unconscious, accessing inner resources, and finding dynamic balance and harmony. As a hypnotherapist, I create a trusting comfortable environment and help you transition to a hypnotic or trance-like state allowing you to open up and trust your unconscious mind which has a plethora of wisdom to assist you. In the initial session, we will have a conversation as well as begin the process of hypnosis. Often, discovering the subtleties of communicating with your unconscious is the door you need to unlock your creativity, understand your symptoms, and find solutions.

Myths and Misconceptions about Hypnosis:

(adapted from the professional training guide of The Weiss Institute)

  1. The client gives up all power to the hypnotist; the client can be made to say or do something against his or her will. All hypnosis is, in fact, self-hypnosis. The client is always in control. The hypnotist is there to help guide and structure the experience but only to the degree that the client permits it. It is clearly a relationship of mutual responsiveness. Hypnosis may make it easier for people to experience suggestions but it does not force them to have these experiences.   The client may, at will, refuse a suggestion or break the hypnotic trance altogether. Even the most responsive clients can refuse to follow the suggestion of the hypnotist.
  2. Hypnosis is a form of sleep. Although the word hypnosis is derived from the Greek word hypnos, hypnosis, unlike sleep, is a state of focused concentration. Although there is decreased physical activity, the client is aware and responsive and can remember what went on during and after the experience. The electroencephalograms of people in hypnotic trance do not resemble those of people who are asleep.
  3. One must be relaxed in order to be in hypnosis. Since hypnosis is a state of concentrated attention, you can be anxious, even in deep suspense, and still be focused. Physical relaxation is not a necessary prerequisite for hypnosis to occur.
  4. Only a small percentage (or certain types) of people can be hypnotized. People range on a continuum of hypnotizability. About 20% of all people can be hypnotized deeply and easily. About 65% can be hypnotized to lighter states, and with practice and experience, many of these people can go on to experience deeper trance states. Of the remaining 15%, some can experience a light trance state. Others are not able to reach any trance state at all.   However, it is important to know that hypnotherapy is not for everyone. For example, it is not a good idea for anyone with a history of psychosis, schizophrenia, history of alcohol or drug psychosis, borderline personality disorder, senility, seizure disorder, narcolepsy, bipolar conditions, and clinical depressive illnesses or those exhibiting suicidal tendencies.
  5. You can get stuck in hypnosis. The client can terminate the trance state at any time. If the hypnotherapist left the room or if a hypnosis tape was interrupted before instructions to emerge were given, the client would either open his or her eyes at any time or drift into sleep and awaken after a brief nap.
  6. Hypnosis is “truth” serum. Although hypnosis allows the subject to access memories, often subconscious memories, with great attention to detail, the client always with awareness and control, can censor or withhold what is divulged to the hypnotherapist.
  7. Hypnosis is therapy. Hypnosis is not therapy in and of itself. Rather hypnosis is a therapeutic tool that can be used in conjunction with other modalities to promote self-awareness, autonomy, and enhanced well-being. Although the results of hypnosis can be astounding, “cures” are by no means guaranteed, nor are they generally instantaneous.
