When I first came to Mia, I was going through an extremely hard time. I was completely hopeless; it was hard for me to live everyday of my life, and I was mentally exhausted. Mia put me at ease right away, and was an extremely calming and wise presence in my life. She helped me put the areas of my life into perspective and immediately helped me to identify and work through the obstacles. With her kindness and guiding sense, I now feel like a completely different person then I did when I first started seeing her. Today I am excited about my life, and the small hurdles no longer throw me into a downward spiral like they previously had. To put it bluntly, she helped me save my life and appreciate all of the things for which to be thankful. I cannot thank her enough for her help, and I would highly recommend her to anyone in need of some extra guidance and perspective.

Psychotherapy

Do you ever feel too overwhelmed to deal with your problems?

If so, you’re not alone. According to the National Institute of Mental Health,  more than a quarter of American adults experience depression, anxiety or another mental disorder in any given year. Others need help coping with a serious illness, relationship troubles, job loss, and the death of a loved one, stress, substance abuse or other issues. And these problems can often become debilitating. A psychotherapist can help you work through such problems.

What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a collaborative treatment based on the relationship between an individual and the psychotherapist. Grounded in dialogue, it provides a supportive environment that allows you to talk openly with someone who’s objective, neutral and nonjudgmental. You and I will work together to identify and change the thought and behavior patterns that are keeping you from feeling your best. By the time you’re done, you will have a new understanding of the problem that brought you to therapy in the first place and you will have learned new skills so you can better cope with whatever challenges arise in the future.

When should you consider Psychotherapy?

Some people seek psychotherapy because they have felt depressed, anxious or angry for a long time. Others may want help for a chronic illness that is interfering with their emotional or physical well-being. Still, others may have short-term problems they need help navigating. They may be going through a divorce, facing an empty nest, feeling overwhelmed by a new job or grieving a family member’s death, for example.

Signs that you could benefit from Psychotherapy include:

  • You feel an overwhelming, prolonged sense of helplessness and sadness.
  • Your problems don’t seem to get better despite your efforts and help from family and friends.
  • You find it difficult to concentrate on work assignments or to carry out other everyday activities.
  • You worry excessively, expect the worst or are constantly on edge.
  • Your actions, such as drinking too much alcohol, using drugs or being aggressive or impulsive are harming you or others.

What are the different kinds of Psychotherapy?

There are many different approaches to psychotherapy. Generally, therapists draw on one or more of these. Each theoretical perspective acts as a roadmap to help the therapist understand their clients and their problems and develop solutions. The kind of treatment you receive will depend on a variety of factors; I assess what works best for your situation and blend a variety of theoretical perspectives including cognitive behavioral therapy, psychoanalytic and humanistic approaches. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy is a practical approach to treatment. I may ask you to tackle certain tasks designed to help you develop more effective coping skills. This approach often involves homework assignments. You may be asked to gather more information, such as logging your reactions to a particular situation as they occur. Or I might want you to practice new skills between sessions, such as asking someone with an elevator phobia to practice pushing elevator buttons. You might also have reading assignments so you can learn more about a particular topic. Psychoanalytic and Humanistic Approaches typically focus more on talking than doing. You might spend your sessions discussing your early experiences to help you and I better understand the root causes of your current problems.

I combine elements from several styles of psychotherapy blending elements from different approaches and tailor your treatment according to your individual needs. All client information is kept private and confidential.

Psychotherapist Credentials:

In 1993, I received my Masters in Clinical Social Work from New York University and then worked under strict clinical supervision for many years to hone my skills. For the past 15+ years, I’ve run a successful private practice as a  Licensed Clinical Social Worker.

In 1998, I received my certificate as a Certified Employee Assistant Professional (EAP) specializing in workplace problems including conflict resolution, organizational restructuring, conduct issues and stressors that decrease work productivity.  I am currently utilized as an EAP referral  source for companies including Goldman Sachs, Scholastic, and New York University.

Other Professional Credentials:

In 2006, I completed my training as a Certified Life Coach from The iPEC Coach Training Program accredited by the International Coach Federation (ICF), the governing organization that sets and monitors the international standards for professional coaching ethics, training, and practices.

In 2014, I completed my hypnotherapy training through the NLP Center of New York and became a Board Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist by the National Board for Certified Clinical Hypnotherapists (NBCCH).   I also completed a professional training program in Regression Therapy through the Weiss Institute from Dr. Brian L. Most recently, in 2015, I became a Certified  ThetaHealing® Practitioner incorporating this healing modality into my practice. Ever the seeker for innovative techniques to help people move forward, I continue to study the ThetaHealing® technique as a rapid way to access subconscious limiting beliefs to transform these beliefs that no longer serve you. Instead, you are left empowered to create optimal balance and health in all areas of your life. I am so passionate about this technique that in 2018 I became a ThetaHealing® Instructor.
